You may have noticed that these days I am being silly and trying to put myself into the shoes of smart people. I have started by trademarking a saying and today I will try to predict the future. The future for the profession of Medical Doctor.
Julia, stop reading now, this is not for you ! you better focus on finishing the degree !!!
I was asked a number of days ago by a friend, who has finished a Phd, if it is wise to make another degree and become a medical doctor. I said NO.
Doctors profession as Pilots profession sounds very romantic, but being a Pilot is a very borrring, they just fly planes from a point to a point. Doctors profession (in todays environment) is borring as well, they just follow instructions and if they do not, then they loose the license and go to jail. Ofcourse one can become a test pilot, which is challenging, but it is years of training and it is loads of luck to become one. The same thing is with a doctor, one can get to the top and run a hospital, but it is extremely challenging and involves luck and many connections and politics ...
I think that doctors profession is going to change very much in the next 20 years, which is still our life time. This opinion is based on seeing the developments of the the computer systems and testing/diagnosing technology which becomes very intelligent. Therefore I assume that in developed countries the profession of medical doctor in its traditional way will disappear in the next ten years. A patient will come to a hospital and the rest will be automatic; blood tests, x-rays, everything and the treatments will be calculated and suggested by a computer. Therefore I predict that the only part which will stay in the need is "talking" and "listening" to the patients. Therefore young people who are passionate for work with people should learn psychology, this is the profession of the future !
Any disagreements ?
